Our Lake Cabin Adventure: A Dream Come True #cabinhunting

So, here’s the deal: In early October 2024, I did something that could only be described as optimistically adventurous. I asked my husband to keep an open mind—wide open—and go check out a fixer-upper on a large lake chain just an hour away from where we currently lived. I know, it sounds suspicious, but hear me out. The pictures online? They had potential. In my mind, at least. I thought, “How bad can it really be?” Sure, the place was a little weird on the inside. A few questionable DIY renovations, like the kind you see on Pinterest that go horribly wrong, but I figured those could be ripped out, no big deal. So, I called up my real estate agent (who’s also my high school friend, by the way) and my parents, and we made the trek out there.

Five minutes in, the verdict was clear:

  • The layout was… questionable at best.
  • The foundation? Well, it was, uh, “in need of work.”
  • Basically, this place was screaming for a full gut job.

Naturally, my husband, the practical one in the relationship, did not want to touch this with a ten-foot pole. No, no, no. And he didn’t want to waste the drive either. So, he had this brilliant idea: “Hey, let’s stop by that cabin I’ve been talking about. You know, the one you rejected based on pictures.” You mean the weird barn aesthetic one? Yes, exactly that. It had a golf course, a lake, and was slightly out of our price range—basically the “just looking” kind of property. But, begrudgingly, I agreed to this quick detour. To be honest, I told my real estate agent on the way over that we were NOT buying this place—this was just to humor my husband. She’d thank me later.

When we pulled up to the property, my jaw hit the floor. Wait. What? The barn, which had looked like a sad, unconvincing barn online, now looked… charming. Yes, charming. I was in shock. The lawn was so lush it could have been in a commercial for some fancy landscaping company. And the flowers—oh, the flowers! They looked like something out of a Pinterest garden board. As for the property itself? A full 1.2 acres of perfectly flat yard. The interior was, dare I say, well-maintained? And, get this—no walls were crying out to be torn down! The view from the deck was to die for. How had this place been on the market for 4.5 months without anyone else snapping it up?

As I got back in the car to head home, I turned to my friend and said, “Well, I guess we’re making an offer on a barn cabin!”

Now, here’s where things get wild. We took a moment to consider the facts: the location (gorgeous lake chain), the fact it had been sitting on the market for months, and how much we were really willing to pay. We lowballed it a bit—just to see what would happen. The next day, we expected a counteroffer. But nope. They just accepted our offer. What?? No counter? They just took it? After all the back-and-forth, rejections, and offers that had slipped through our fingers, we were in shock. Could this really be happening? It felt a little like the universe was saying, “You know what? Go ahead, take it.” And so, we did.

The inspection came back clean—like, ridiculously clean—with only a few minor fixes. We agreed on a closing date just before Thanksgiving. I couldn’t believe it—this was actually happening.

So here’s the thing. My “perfect” cabin checklist was pretty simple:

  • On a lake chain.
  • With at least a couple of restaurants you can boat to.
  • Flat yard.
  • Within an hour of home.
  • No complete gut job required—just some cosmetic updates.

And bam—I’m pretty sure we hit the jackpot with this one. We’ll see what happens when we dive into the work, but I’m excited to finally get started.

I’ll update you with the journey as we go—expect a few before-and-afters (and maybe some DIY disasters). But for now? I’m just soaking in the fact that we finally found the one. Yes, it’s a barn. Yes, it’s on a golf course. And yes, I’m already planning the boat trips to the local restaurant. Buying a cabin in Minnesota has been a ride!
